ITS United Kingdom Local Authority / Urban Interest Group elects new leaders

Steve George of Efkon UK has been elected Chairman of the LAUIG, the forum within ITS (UK) for Local Authority personnel and for their suppliers and consultants. Dave Stoner of Tenet Technology was elected as the new Honorary Secretary. The previous post-holders, Gary Umpleby of Mott MacDonald and Jem McCluskey of Scott Wilson, had both stepped down after changes in jobs.

Both Steve and Dave have long experience in the use of Intelligent Transport Systems for local authorities. Steve was formerly Principal Strategy Officer for the West Midlands Chief Engineers and Planning Officers Support Team. During this period he was the project manager for the MATTISSE real time traffic and travel information system and the Project Officer for the West Midlands UTC Major Transport Scheme that has recently gained full DfT approval. This scheme will deliver a £26 million package of improvements aimed at reducing congestion and improving bus journeys in the West Midlands based upon the delivery of a UTMC compliant system across strategic routes in the West Midlands. Steve is also Chair of the Travel Information Highway Executive Group; former Chair of the POLIS Traffic Efficiency and Mobility Group, and a member of the Institute of Highways and Transportation (IHT).

Dave Stoner was ITS Manager at Kent County Council for many years and was responsible for a wide range of ITS projects including the establishment of Kent’s Traffic Management Centre. He has recently moved into the private sector with Tenet and now works with their Local Authority clients to help them get maximum benefit from their UTMC systems.

Steve said:” I am delighted that the Interest Group members have placed their confidence in myself and Dave to lead this popular and important group. I believe that ITS deployment will take greater significance over the coming years and Local Authorities stand to benefit greatly from the adoption of ITS technologies and services. It is my intention that the Local Authority / Urban Interest Group play an active role in the deployment of ITS in the UK and that we build on the excellent foundation provided by our predecessors“
