New forum for women in the Intelligent Transport Systems sector

Like all the ITS (UK) Interest Groups, WITS welcomes participation from all ITS (UK) members. It also wants to attract corresponding participants world-wide. The Chair of WITS is Sharon Kindleysides (pictured), who heads up the UK operation of Kapsch TrafficCom, and the Honorary Secretary is Jenni Borg, Senior Manager with Detica in London.
Sharon said “ Women are extremely important end users of ITS but tend to be under-represented in the industry as a whole. With WITS, we are aiming to raise the awareness of this exciting industry as an attractive career path for all and are looking forward to organising a number of interesting sessions to learn from the experiences of leading women within the industry and to become a valuable networking forum for transport and engineering professionals”
Jennie Martin, Secretary General of ITS (UK), said “Less than 10% of those who participate in ITS (UK) are women. A lot more than 10% of the concerns voiced within our membership are related to the problem of recruiting and retaining staff in the ITS sector. We need to do much better at recruiting from the whole potential workforce to overcome this problem, and setting up the WITS is ITS (UK)’s first contribution to making sure that the sector does not miss out on female potential staff”.
